Why the Recall Was Issued

Hyundai and Kia have announced a safety recall for select 2025–2026 model year vehicles due to improperly tightened bolts inside the engine. According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), connecting rod bolts may have been installed with insufficient torque, potentially leading to engine failure and even fire risk.

The issue could cause abnormal knocking noises, illumination of the oil pressure warning light, and in extreme cases, a complete loss of drive power. Prolonged use could result in catastrophic internal engine damage.

This recall, officially filed under recall number 281, affects a small number of vehicles, but the consequences of the defect are severe enough to warrant a full engine replacement for affected units.

Affected Models

The recall impacts a limited batch of vehicles in the U.S., including:

  • 2025–2026 Hyundai Tucson – 22 units
  • 2025–2026 Hyundai Santa Fe – 7 units
  • 2025 Kia K4 – 29 units
  • 2025 Kia Sorento – 1 unit

All affected models were produced with engines that may contain loose connecting rod bolts, increasing the risk of engine damage, oil leaks, or fire.

What Owners Should Do

Hyundai and Kia dealers will replace the entire engine free of charge. Owners will be notified by first-class mail starting October 24, 2025. In the meantime, drivers are encouraged to listen for unusual knocking noises and monitor their oil pressure warning light closely.

Owners can also check their vehicle’s recall status using their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

How Hyundai and Kia Owners Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
