Volkswagen Group of America is recalling nearly 14,000 electric vehicles due to a battery charging issue that could result in a sudden loss of power while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
History Behind the Recall
The recall involves specific 2024-2025 Audi Q4 e-tron and Sportback models, along with 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 SUVs. The issue stems from condensation forming on the printed circuit board (PCB) of the vehicle’s integrated DC/DC converter (OCDC). This can cause a short circuit and a gradual failure of the vehicle’s electrical systems, increasing the risk of a crash.
The fault was first discovered in September 2024, after field reports of vehicles failing to charge or needing to be towed. VW has since logged 344 related field claims in the U.S., prompting a full safety recall after further testing confirmed that insufficient protective coating on the PCB made the unit vulnerable to moisture.
Which Models Are Affected
The recall applies to:
- 2024 Volkswagen ID.4
- 2024–2025 Audi Q4 e-tron
- 2024–2025 Audi Q4 Sportback e-tron
Approximately 10% of these vehicles are believed to have defective components.
What Owners Need to Do Next
Volkswagen and Audi dealers will replace the affected OCDC units free of charge. The updated component includes improved moisture protection. Notification letters will be mailed to affected owners by April 25, 2025.
For more information, owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 or visit the NHTSA recall site.
How Volkswagen Owners Can Take Back Control
While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
