Mazda Recalls Over 171,000 Vehicles for Airbag Failure Risk

History Behind the Recall

Mazda has issued a recall for 171,412 vehicles across the United States due to a defect that may prevent airbags from deploying in a crash, a potentially life-threatening issue.

The recall, published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on May 29, affects certain 2024 and 2025 Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-30 models.

The problem occurs when the battery becomes fully depleted with the ignition left in the “On” position. Upon recharging and restarting the vehicle, the Sophisticated Airbag Sensor unit may store a permanent internal fault that disables the airbags and triggers the warning light, even though the vehicle appears to function normally.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

  • 2024–2025 Mazda 3 (sedan and hatchback) – 51,857 units
  • 2024–2025 Mazda CX-30 – 119,555 units

All affected vehicles are currently under full warranty coverage, according to Mazda.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Mazda will address the issue by reprogramming the airbag sensor unit with updated software or replacing it with an improved version free of charge.

Owners will receive mailed notifications with instructions to bring their vehicles to an authorized Mazda dealer. Notifications are expected to be fully sent out by the end of July.

At this time, no injuries or crashes have been reported in connection with the defect.

How Mazda Drivers Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
