NHTSA Investigating 1.2 Million Ram Trucks for Rollaway Risk After Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a new investigation into more than 1.1 million RAM pickup trucks due to rollaway risks linked to previous recall repairs.

History Behind the Investigation

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is reviewing the effectiveness of two earlier recalls, Recall 17V-821 (2017) and Recall 18V-100 (2018), that aimed to fix a defect in the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) system.

The affected vehicles include:

  • 2013–2018 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 models

All equipped with column-mounted shifters.

The BTSI defect allows the gear shifter to move out of Park without pressing the brake pedal, or even inserting the key. This significantly increases the risk of unintended vehicle rollaway.

Complaints Continue Years After Fixes

Despite earlier repairs, ODI has now received:

  • 14 vehicle-owner complaints
  • 6 reports involving death or injury (but no fatalities)

All of these incidents were reported after the recall remedies were performed, raising concerns that the original fixes may not be working as intended.

NHTSA is now trying to determine whether the remedy from the 2017–2018 recalls is defective, and additional or new root causes exist that could cause rollaway incidents.

At this stage, this is an open investigation, not a formal recall. But based on its findings, further action may be taken by Stellantis (RAM’s parent company).

What Ram Owners Should Do Next
If you own a 2013–2018 Ram truck, especially one affected by the earlier recalls, monitor for any unusual gear shifting behavior. You can check your recall history by entering your VIN at nhtsa.gov  or contacting your local RAM dealer.

NHTSA will provide updates as the investigation progresses.

How Ram Owners Can Take Back Control
While this investigation is ongoing, many truck owners remain frustrated by recurring issues even after recall repairs. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
