History Behind the Recall

Ferrari has issued a Do-Not-Drive recall notice for a small number of its 296 GTB coupe and 296 GTS roadster models after identifying a defect that could significantly increase the risk of a vehicle fire. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects six vehicles total in the United States.

The issue stems from the oil filter connection on the turbocharger oil feed pipes, which may have been incorrectly tightened during assembly. Ferrari warns that improper torque on the securing nut can result in engine oil leakage, which could come into contact with extremely hot components in the turbocharged system and cause what regulators describe as a potential “thermal event.”

Because of the severity of the risk, Ferrari has instructed affected owners not to drive their vehicles until repairs are completed.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall applies to six 2025 model-year Ferrari 296 vehicles, including:

  • 2 Ferrari 296 GTB coupes
  • 4 Ferrari 296 GTS roadsters

Ferrari reports that 100% of the recalled vehicles are susceptible to the defect. The automaker traced the issue to a semi-automated workstation operated by an external supplier, which may have improperly torqued the oil filter nut during production.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Ferrari first identified the issue during an internal review in October 2025, initially believing it was limited to undelivered vehicles. Further investigation revealed additional affected customer vehicles, prompting the recall campaign on October 20, 2025.

Ferrari has stated that the repair is straightforward. Dealers will inspect and verify the torque values on the oil filter connection and correct them as necessary. All work will be performed free of charge.

At this time, Ferrari reports no known injuries, fires, or crashes related to the defect. However, owners are strongly advised to comply with the Do-Not-Drive notice until the repair is completed.

How Ferrari Owners Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
