History Behind the Recall

In a rare move for the Japanese motorcycle giant, Kawasaki has issued one of its largest recalls in recent years, urging owners of the Ninja ZX-6R to stop riding immediately. Nearly 18,000 units of the popular supersport bike are affected, spanning 2024 and 2025 model years.

According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall stems from a manufacturing defect involving over-torqued crankshaft bolts. This issue can lead to damage in the crankshaft bushing, potentially causing sudden engine failure during operation. Posing a serious safety risk for riders.

The Cause and the Consequences

Kawasaki reports that the crankshaft bolts in certain ZX-6R engines were tightened beyond specification at the factory, resulting in improper oil clearance and potential internal damage. If the bushing wears out or fails, the engine could lose power instantly, increasing the risk of a crash.

Given the potential for sudden loss of propulsion, Kawasaki has issued a strict “Do Not Ride” advisory until repairs are completed.

What Riders Need to Know

The recall covers Ninja ZX-6R, ZX-6R ABS, ZX-6R 40th Anniversary Edition, and ZX-6R KRT Edition motorcycles built between April 3, 2023, and April 28, 2025. While Kawasaki has confirmed the defect, the company has not yet announced an official repair remedy or VIN range for affected bikes.

Owners are urged to stop riding immediately and await further instructions from the manufacturer. Once available, repairs will be performed free of charge by authorized Kawasaki dealers.

How Kawasaki Owners Can Take Back Control
