History Behind the Recall
GMC has issued a safety recall affecting 354 units of the 2026 Hummer EV Pickup and SUV after discovering a wiring defect that may prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying during certain crashes.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect involves an improperly crimped wire connection within the instrument panel wiring harness. If the connection fails, the passenger-side airbag may not receive the deployment signal, increasing the risk of injury in a frontal collision.
GMC traced the issue to a brief production period in July 2025, when a supplier’s automated crimping equipment was offline for maintenance and a manual backup process resulted in inconsistent terminal connections.
Which Vehicles Are Affected
The recall applies to 354 vehicles built between July 31 and October 24, 2025, including:
- 2026 GMC Hummer EV Pickup
- 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV
According to GMC, 245 SUVs and 109 pickups remain affected. While some vehicles were corrected before leaving the factory, others were delivered with the defective wiring harness supplied by Yazaki North America.
What Owners Need to Do Next
GMC dealers will install a jumper harness with properly crimped connectors, free of charge. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning December 22, 2025.
Some owners may notice an airbag warning light, though GMC notes that not all affected vehicles will display one. Owners are encouraged to check their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or contact GMC customer support to schedule a service appointment as soon as possible.
Until the repair is completed, the front passenger airbag may not deploy properly in a crash.
How GMC Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
