GMC Hummer Recall Issued Over High-Voltage Battery Concerns

General Motors has issued a safety recall for approximately 1,124 GMC Hummer EVs and Hummer EV SUVs from model years 2022 to 2024. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these vehicles may experience an issue with their high-voltage battery packs, increasing the risk of fire.

History Behind the Recall

The recall comes after multiple reports of potential defects in the battery packs supplied by LG Energy Solution. These batteries could suffer from coolant leakage due to improper sealing of battery cells. Such leakage increases the likelihood of short circuits, which can lead to thermal events, even while the vehicle is parked and not in use.

General Motors first became aware of the issue in early 2024 and began investigations into the source of the defect. The automaker subsequently identified the production flaw at LG Energy Solution’s facility and issued the recall as a precautionary measure.

Which Models Are Affected?

This recall applies to specific VINs of GMC Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV models manufactured between November 2021 and September 2023.

If you own one of these models, you can use the VIN Lookup Tool on the NHTSA (https://www.nhtsa.gov/) or GMC website to confirm if your vehicle is affected.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Owners of recalled vehicles are advised to contact their GMC dealerships for an immediate inspection. Dealerships will replace affected battery packs free of charge. Additionally, owners are urged to avoid parking their vehicles indoors or near flammable materials until the repair is completed. General Motors has begun notifying dealers, with owner notification letters expected by December 15, 2024.

How GMC Owners Can Take Back Control

While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this—underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
