Volkswagen and Audi Recall Nearly 30,000 Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Malfunction

Volkswagen Group has issued a recall for nearly 30,000 vehicles due to a rearview camera software defect that may prevent the image from displaying properly, increasing the risk of accidents. The recall, officially reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects various Volkswagen and Audi models across multiple years.

What’s Causing the Recall?

According to NHTSA recall documents, the issue stems from a software malfunction in the rearview camera system. The defect may cause the camera not to display an image when the vehicle is in reverse, making it harder for drivers to see obstacles and pedestrians behind them.

Since federal regulations mandate functional rearview cameras for vehicle safety, Volkswagen and Audi are issuing this recall to ensure compliance.

Which Volkswagen and Audi Vehicles Are Affected?

The recall covers 29,970 vehicles, including:

  • Volkswagen ID.4 (2023-2024)
  • Audi Q4 e-Tron (2023-2024)
  • Audi Q4 e-Tron Sportback (2023-2024)

How Volkswagen and Audi Are Fixing the Issue

To correct the problem, dealers will update the rearview camera software at no cost to vehicle owners. No hardware replacements are necessary, as the issue is software-related.

Volkswagen Group will begin notifying owners via mail on March 15, 2025.

What Owners Should Do Next

Contact a local Volkswagen or Audi dealership to schedule a free software update once notifications are sent.

Check your vehicle’s recall status by entering your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on NHTSA’s recall website or Volkswagen/Audi’s official recall pages.

How Volkswagen and Audi Owners Can Take Back Control

While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
