Ford Recalls More Than 148,000 Vehicles Over Brake and Software Safety Risks

History Behind the Recall

Ford Motor Company has announced two separate recalls affecting over 148,000 vehicles in the United States, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The recalls address critical safety issues involving brake system fluid leaks and potential powertrain software malfunctions that could lead to an engine stall.

The largest recall, affecting over 123,000 vehicles, stems from a brake fluid leak that could reduce braking performance and increase stopping distances, creating a serious crash risk. This is not the first time Ford has dealt with brake system concerns in these models.

A second recall involves 24,655 of its latest 2025 Explorer models, which may experience an unexpected reset of the powertrain control module (PCM) while driving. This malfunction could damage the park system or cause the engine to stall, posing a hazard, especially at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

Which Models Are Affected?

  • 2017–2018 Ford F-150
  • 2017–2018 Ford Expedition
  • 2017–2018 Lincoln Navigator
  • 2025 Ford Explorer

The F-150, Expedition, and Navigator models are impacted by the brake fluid leak, while the 2025 Explorer models are affected by the PCM reset issue.

What Owners Need To Do Next

Ford dealerships will inspect and replace the affected master cylinder or brake booster on the older models and update the powertrain software in 2025 Explorer models free of charge. Notification letters will be mailed to owners by May 26, 2025.

Concerned owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or visit the NHTSA recall lookup tool to check their vehicle’s status using the VIN.

How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control

While these recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
