History Behind the Recall
Tesla has issued another major recall affecting its two most popular electric vehicles, the Model 3 and Model Y, due to concerns over power steering assist failure. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and German regulator Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) are both tracking the issue, which has now led to a formal recall of over 552,000 vehicles.
The concern stems from the potential loss of electric power assist steering (EPAS), typically after the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Tesla has acknowledged that the defect may cause a warning message to appear, and in some cases, can lead to increased steering effort, particularly in cold temperatures. The automaker previously attempted to address similar issues through an over-the-air software update in October 2023. However, the problem has persisted in newer production models.
Which Models Are Affected
The current recall affects:
- 2023 Tesla Model 3
- 2023 Tesla Model Y
Vehicles produced between February 28, 2023, and October 11, 2023, are included. Tesla’s internal reference for the recall is SB-25-00-004, and KBA is monitoring it under the identifier 14811R.
An earlier recall affected Model 3 and Y units built between May 2022 and September 2023, targeting the same EPAS failure.
What Owners Need to Do Next
Tesla has begun rolling out a new over-the-air (OTA) update to resolve the steering issue. Owners should ensure their vehicle software is updated to version 2023.38.4 or newer. Those unsure about the update or experiencing issues are advised to contact their nearest Tesla service center or visit Tesla’s recall support page.
How Tesla Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
