History Behind the Recall

Ford Motor Company has issued a safety recall affecting more than 272,000 vehicles after discovering a defect that may prevent certain models from properly engaging the Park position.

The issue could allow vehicles to move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem involves the integrated park module, which may fail to fully lock the transmission into Park when selected. The defect is linked to a condition where a park module pawl can bind against an internal slider component, preventing proper engagement.

Ford says the issue may stem from manufacturing variations or material conditions that create additional friction between components. As a result, the vehicles may not comply with Federal  Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) requirements related to theft protection and rollaway prevention.

Drivers may notice warning signs such as a dashboard alert or the Park indicator failing to illuminate. Although the electronic parking brake is designed to automatically engage as a backup measure, any failure of that system could increase the risk of unintended vehicle movement.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall applies to approximately 272,645 vehicles, including:

• 2025–2026 Ford Maverick – 80,468 vehicles

• 2022–2026 Ford F-150 Lightning – 104,113 vehicles

• 2024–2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E – 88,064 vehicles

All affected vehicles were sold in the United States.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Ford will address the issue through a free over-the-air (OTA) software update, allowing many owners to resolve the problem without visiting a dealership. Owners who prefer can also schedule an in-person repair at an authorized Ford dealer at no cost.

Owner notification letters are expected to begin mailing on February 2, with a follow-up notification sent once the final software remedy becomes available later in the month.

Owners can contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 for additional information or check their vehicle identification number (VIN) at nhtsa.gov/recalls to confirm whether their vehicle is included.

How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
