Ford Recalls Nearly 1.1 Million Vehicles Over Rearview Camera Software Defect

Ford Motor Company has announced a significant recall involving nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the U.S. due to a software issue that may cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze, or not display at all. This malfunction can occur during reverse, increasing the risk of a crash by impairing driver visibility.

History Behind the Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an inquiry in January 2025, following over three dozen complaints linked to 2021–2023 F-150 models. Ford’s engineering team replicated the defect by April, tracing the failure to specific infotainment software variants.

Although Ford has only reported one minor crash with property damage, the company is acting preemptively to prevent further risk. This is not Ford’s first encounter with rear camera issues; in April, the automaker issued two additional recalls for over 289,000 vehicles, and in November, Ford agreed to pay a $165 million civil penalty following prior delays in addressing similar defects.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall includes a broad range of Ford and Lincoln models spanning model years 2021 to 2025, specifically:

  • 2021–2024 Ford: Bronco, F-150, Edge
  • 2023–2024 Ford: Escape, Corsair, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, F-600
  • 2022–2024 Ford: Expedition, Mustang
  • 2022–2025 Ford Transit
  • 2021–2023 Ford Mach-E, Lincoln Nautilus
  • 2024 Ford Ranger
  • 2022–2024 Lincoln Navigator

These vehicles may all run infotainment software with camera display malfunctions due to a dashboard operating system bug.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Ford will issue two letters to affected owners. The first, expected by June 16, 2025, will notify them of the safety risk. A second letter will follow once the repair software is ready.

Owners will receive a free over-the-air (OTA) update or can visit a Ford dealer for manual installation. This remedy will correct the infotainment system’s ability to reliably display rearview camera footage.

Vehicle owners can also check their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to see if their car is part of this recall.

How Ford Drivers Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
