Audi is recalling nearly 6,500 e-tron GT and RS e-tron GT models from 2022 to 2024 over concerns of a high-voltage battery module defect that could lead to a thermal event or fire. The recall impacts vehicles equipped with potentially faulty battery modules supplied by LG Energy Solution.
History Behind the Recall
This recall is an expansion of a previous recall issued in March 2024. Audi, in collaboration with Porsche, had conducted data analytics and hardware analyses to determine if high-voltage battery modules needed replacement. Although some vehicles had their batteries replaced, new findings revealed that individual cells within the battery modules could degrade over time, increasing the risk of internal short circuits.
Audi’s Product Safety Committee decided on September 23, 2024, to implement a new recall to ensure continuous monitoring of the battery’s health via an onboard diagnostic software update.
Which Models Are Affected?
The recall affects the following vehicles:
- 2022-2024 Audi e-tron GT: 4,980 units produced between March 2021 and December 2023.
- 2022-2024 Audi RS e-tron GT: 1,519 units produced between March 2021 and February 2024.
What Owners Need to Do Next
Owners of affected vehicles are advised to limit their charging to 80% capacity until a software update becomes available in the first quarter of 2025. Audi will provide advanced diagnostic software that monitors battery performance and detects potential issues in real-time.
For customers whose vehicles have online data monitoring capabilities, Audi will continuously evaluate battery data remotely. If any anomalies are detected, Audi will notify owners to schedule battery module replacements. For vehicles without online monitoring, Audi dealerships will conduct regular diagnostic checks and replace battery modules if needed.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by November 29, 2024. For more information, owners can contact Audi customer service or check their vehicle’s recall status through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
How Audi Owners Can Take Back Control
While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this—underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
