Land Rover Faces Class Action Lawsuit Over Fragile Defender Windshields

Background of the Class Action

Land Rover is currently facing a class action lawsuit over alleged defects in the windshields of certain Defender models. Filed in October 2024, the lawsuit claims that the windshields in Land Rover Defender vehicles are prone to cracking or chipping far more easily than expected under normal driving conditions. According to the suit, owners have experienced cracking even without significant impact, raising concerns about the quality and durability of the windshields used in these vehicles by the Alleged Windshield Defect

The class action specifically targets the following Land Rover Defender models:

  • 2020–2024 Land Rover Defender models, particularly the Defender 90 and Defender 110 variants.

Owners report that windshields on these models are particularly vulnerable to cracking or chipping, often under minimal stress or due to minor impacts. This alleged defect has not only led to frequent repairs but has also posed potential safety risks. Some plaintiffs argue that replacing the windshield has done little to resolve the issue, as cracks or chips continue to appear shortly after replacement.

The class action alleges that Land Rover failed to adequately disclose the potential vulnerability of the Defender’s windshield. Plaintiffs claim this omission constitutes a breach of consumer protection laws, as it left customers uninformed about the risk of frequent windshield damage.

According to the lawsuit, Land Rover also failed to offer a permanent fix for the issue, despite numerous complaints from owners.

The plaintiffs seek compensation for costs associated with windshield repairs and replacements, as well as damages for the diminished resale value of affected vehicles. Additionally, they argue that Land Rover should provide a more durable replacement option that meets the expected standards of an off-road vehicle.

What Defender Owners Need to Do Next

Affected Land Rover Defender models are encouraged to monitor the progress of the lawsuit and may consider joining the class, or take it into their own hands an consider other options if they have experienced similar issues. Those eligible could receive compensation for repair costs and additional damages if the class action is successful.

How Land Rover Owners Can Take Back Control

While this class action lawsuit has been initiated, thousands of Land Rover owners are likely affected by the same alleged windshield defect, with many expressing dissatisfaction over Land Rover’s inadequate solutions. These types of issues often lead to escalated legal action, highlighting the importance of protecting consumer rights.

What are the Filter Defects and Clogging Issues in Land Rovers and Jaguars?

After receiving many complaints against these models, several investigations were conducted, and finally, a class-action lawsuit was filed involving some models that presented the vehicle stalling issues. The lawsuit alleges that specific models of Land Rovers, Range Rovers, and Jaguars are equipped with faulty diesel particular filters (DPF) prone to clogging and so, pose a severe safety hazard to drivers.

The DPF is an integral part of any vehicle responsible for capturing and storing exhaust soot to reduce emissions in diesel cars. They only have a finite capacity, which increases the occurrence risk of periodic clogging if not emptied or “burned off.” This is known as the “regeneration process,” which burns the excess soot and reduces the chances of any harmful exhaust emission.

The lawsuit involving the faulty DPF in Land Rovers, Range Rovers, and Jaguars states that the DPF found in these vehicles is prone to clogging even under normal circumstances. It also claims that there is an issue with the warning light, and it takes a while to activate and indicate a failed DPF. The defects present in the vehicles can cause the system’s sudden failure, limit vehicle performance, and lose power without any warning.
