Ford F-150 Trucks Investigated for Sudden Downshifting Issue

History Behind the Recall

Federal safety regulators have launched an investigation into nearly 1.3 million Ford F-150 trucks following over 100 consumer complaints regarding unexpected and dangerous transmission behavior. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affected vehicles may suddenly downshift to a lower gear without warning, causing rapid deceleration and increasing the risk of accidents.

The NHTSA has received 138 complaints tied to 2015–2017 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with a 6-speed transmission. Some owners reported that their vehicles’ rear wheels locked, seized, or skidded as a result of the abrupt downshifting, which could lead to a loss of control or a crash, especially at higher speeds.

Though no official recall has been issued yet, the NHTSA has opened a preliminary evaluation to determine the scope and severity of the issue and decide whether a formal recall is necessary. The investigation highlights concerns over driver and passenger safety given the popularity of the F-150, America’s best-selling pickup.

Ford Motor Company has acknowledged the investigation and says it is cooperating with regulators to support the agency’s review.

Which Models Are Affected

The investigation currently involves:

  • 2015 Ford F-150
  • 2016 Ford F-150
  • 2017 Ford F-150

All affected vehicles are equipped with 6-speed automatic transmissions. These models are widely used across the U.S. for both personal and commercial purposes, making the issue particularly far-reaching.

In addition to this probe, Ford has recently issued several other recalls involving various models, including Explorers, Mavericks, Corsairs, and Lincoln Aviators for backup camera and battery-related issues.

What Owners Need to Do Next

While this is not yet an official recall, affected owners should stay alert. Here’s what to do:

  • Check for recall updates on the NHTSA website using your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Report any issues—such as sudden downshifts or wheel lock-ups—to Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or directly to the NHTSA.
  • Drive with caution, especially at higher speeds or in traffic, until more information becomes available.
  • Follow news from NHTSA or Ford in the coming weeks to determine if a formal recall and free repair program will be offered.

If a recall is issued, owners will likely be notified by mail and provided free service at authorized Ford dealerships.

How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control

While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
