Recall Overview

Volvo has issued an urgent safety recall affecting 11,469 plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles in the United States due to a defect that could result in a complete loss of braking under certain conditions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is urging owners to immediately install a critical over-the-air (OTA) software update to address the issue.

The recall, identified as campaign number 25V-392, impacts a range of 2020–2026 Volvo models, including both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

What Is the Problem?

The defect is linked to the vehicle’s braking system under specific driving conditions. If regenerative braking is active and the vehicle coasts downhill for an extended period (approximately one minute and forty seconds) without driver input, the system may fail to maintain braking capability.

This could result in a complete loss of braking while driving downhill, significantly increasing the risk of a crash. At least one serious incident has already been reported and captured on video.

The issue stems from a previous recall remedy related to rearview camera software, which unintentionally introduced this braking risk.

What Owners Should Do

Volvo has released an over-the-air software update to fix the issue, and affected owners are strongly advised to install it immediately.

Until the update is completed, drivers should:

  • Disable regenerative braking features, including “B” mode in hybrids and one-pedal driving in EVs
  • Avoid driving in conditions where prolonged downhill coasting may occur

Owners can check their vehicle’s system for the update or contact their local Volvo dealership to schedule assistance. Volvo customer support is available at 800-458-1552.

Drivers can also verify recall status using their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the NHTSA recall database.

How Volvo Owners Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
