Volkswagen is recalling more than 57,000 SUVs after discovering that a software issue can prevent the rearview camera image from appearing when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The problem affects certain Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles and could reduce a driver’s view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
What is the problem?
The recall covers 38,646 2024-2026 Volkswagen Atlas and 19,205 2024-2026 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SUVs, and according to Volkswagen’s recall information, a low-voltage electrical event can interfere with the rearview camera system. Environmental conditions may contribute to the problem, potentially causing the camera image to disappear from the vehicle’s display when the driver selects reverse.
Losing the rearview camera can significantly reduce visibility when backing up, particularly in busy car parks, driveways or other areas where pedestrians and objects may be difficult to see. At the time of this article, Volkswagen has received hundreds and hundreds of claims that may be connected to the issue, although the automaker said it was not aware of any crashes, injuries, fires or fatalities associated with the defect when the recall was issued.
What owners should do
Owners of affected 2024-2026 Volkswagen Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles should check their VIN through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall database to determine whether their vehicle is included.
Volkswagen plans to correct the problem with a software update, which will be provided free of charge by dealers. Recall notification letters are expected to be sent to owners beginning September 18, 2026.
Drivers who notice that their rearview camera intermittently fails or does not appear when reversing should arrange an inspection rather than relying on the system until the issue has been addressed.
