History Behind the Recall
BMW has issued a safety recall affecting nearly 37,000 X3 SUVs after identifying a software issue that may cause unintended steering wheel movement while the vehicle is stationary. The recall applies to certain 2025–2026 model year BMW X3 vehicles sold in the United States.
According to the recall notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from the steering system software, which may fail to properly detect a malfunction in the steering torque sensor. If this occurs, the steering wheel could move without driver input while the vehicle is stopped.
BMW states that unintended steering movement increases the risk of injury and could potentially lead to a crash if the vehicle were to move unexpectedly. Although the issue occurs when the vehicle is stationary, safety regulators consider it a significant concern due to the possibility of unexpected vehicle behavior.
At this time, BMW reports that it has not received any reports of injuries related to the defect. Which Vehicles Are Affected
The recall includes approximately 36,900 vehicles, specifically:
- 2025–2026 BMW X3 SUVs
All affected vehicles were sold in the United States.
What Owners Need to Do Next
BMW will resolve the issue through a steering system software update, which will be provided free of charge. The update can be completed either through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by visiting an authorized BMW dealership.
Owner notification letters are expected to begin mailing on February 2, 2026. Owners can also check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls once the recall becomes searchable.
For additional assistance, owners may contact BMW customer service at 800-525-7417 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236.
How BMW Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
