History Behind the Recall

Rivian Automotive, LLC has issued a safety recall affecting more than 34,000 electric delivery vehicles (EDVs) after discovering a defect that could impact driver seat belt performance.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the driver’s seat belt pretensioner cable may become damaged over time. If the pretensioner cable is compromised, the seat belt may not properly restrain the occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

NHTSA notes that seat belt pretensioners are a critical safety component designed to tighten the belt during a collision. Any failure of this system reduces occupant protection and poses a serious safety concern.

Which Vehicles Are Affected

The recall applies to approximately 34,824 vehicles, including:

  • 2022–2025 Rivian EDV

All affected vehicles were sold and operated in the United States. Rivian identified the issue during internal review and reported the defect to NHTSA on November 25, 2025.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Rivian has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update to address the issue. In addition, Rivian will inspect the driver’s seat belt pretensioner assembly and replace it if necessary, free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning January 19, 2026. Owners with questions can contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. Rivian’s internal recall number for this campaign is FSAM-1770.

Owners can also check whether their vehicle is included in the recall by entering their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

How Rivian Owners Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.

With the soaring popularity of electric vehicles, challenges come hand in hand. Lucid Motors and Rivian EV owners have recently been experiencing a range of vehicle-related issues. But despite these setbacks, many consumers are still satisfied. The reports of challenges faced by various people provide insight into the transitional phase; these startups are passing through. The promise of a greener future and sustainable transportation seems to outweigh the obstacles along the way.

Lucid Motors Troubles

According to the complaints filed on the NHTSA website and other online forums, the electric vehicle (EV) startup, Lucid Motors, faced some issues with Lucid Air. Owners have experienced gear shifting issues, seat movement malfunctions, loss of motive power, drive system faults, charging glitches, and range issues. Complaints include instances of vehicles moving in the opposite direction of the selected gear and seats moving unexpectedly.

Recently, a San Diego-based Lucid Air owner encountered a gear-shifting problem. Lucid Motors must refine its electric vehicles. Seat movement malfunctions cause inconvenience to the drivers and pose potential dangers. Loss of motive power and drive system faults lead to unexpected breakdowns. While charging glitches and range issues limit the vehicle’s usability.

The Lucid EVs warranty covers the following components:

  • Basic Vehicle: 48 Months/50,000 miles
  • Powertrain: 96 Months/100,000 miles
  • High-voltage battery: 96 Months /100,000 miles to 70% capacity
  • Corrosion protection: 120 Months/unlimited mileage
  • Body and paint defects: 48 Months/unlimited mileage
  • Supplemental Restraint System: 60 Months/60,000 miles

Rivian Challenges

Rivian, the EV Company backed by Ford, has garnered positive attention as it has a high number of satisfied buyers. However, owners have reported a few challenges with their vehicles. These issues include unexpected movement of Rivian RIT trucks while in the “parked” position on a downhill slope, sudden stops in traffic, quality problems with the roof glass, rattling passenger seats due to missing bolts, and a “vampire” battery drain problem. However, consumers have practiced brand loyalty. Rivian must resolve these issues to maintain customer satisfaction and provide a first-class driving experience.

Comparing to Tesla’s Journey

Lucid Motors and Rivian, two promising electric vehicle startups, are currently facing reported issues with their respective models:

  • Lucid Air
  • Rivian R1T trucks
  • Rivians R1S SUV

These challenges are reminiscent of the time when Tesla encountered similar challenges. Tesla resolved such issues over time. To establish themselves in the market, Lucid Motors and Rivian must address and resolve these issues properly.

Bottom Line

Lucid Motors and Rivian, two prominent electric vehicle startups, have recently faced reported issues with their vehicles. Lucid Air owners encountered several problems. Similarly, Rivian owners have experienced unexpected movement in the “parked position,” rattling seats, and battery drain problems. These conundrums raise concerns about the long-term success of the companies.
