Mazda’s popular large SUV has a risk of steering defects that could cause a crash – the Japanese automaker has announced.
Steering Defect Issue – An Overview
Mazda announced this recall after discovering that a worm gear in the power steering motor had an increase in friction. This means owners require more effort when they try to steer the vehicle. Mazda says this increased effort can happen during normal driving and therefore increase the possibility of a crash.
Which Mazda Models Are Affected?
Affecting over 43,000 vehicles, the steering defect has only been discovered on one model, the Mazda CX-90 SUV. Affected models were built between Dec. 27, 2022 and Dec. 11, 2023.
What Customers Need to Do Next
Affected CX-90 owners will be notified about the recall in due course (Any time before March 18, 2024). A letter in the mail will instruct owners to take their affected vehicle to a Mazda dealer, where the worm gear will be replaced, at no cost, for a better component.
It’s important to note that Mazda is not providing reimbursement for any costs associated with repairing the steering defect, as their new vehicle warranty does not cover it.
How Consumers Can Take Back Control
This latest announcement from Mazda affects a critical safety feature (steering) on their CX-90 SUV. Whilst recalls and free repairs have been announced for the affected vehicles, many owners continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further legal action, just like this – underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
