Recall Overview
Tesla has issued a safety recall affecting 12,963 electric vehicles in the United States due to a defect that may cause a sudden loss of propulsion while driving. The recall includes certain 2025 Tesla Model 3 and 2026 Tesla Model Y vehicles built between March and August 2025.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue involves high-voltage battery components that could fail without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.
What Is the Problem?
The defect is linked to the battery contactor, a critical component responsible for controlling the flow of electricity from the battery to the electric motor. In affected vehicles, the contactor contains a faulty solenoid that may fail due to a poor internal connection.
If the solenoid fails, it can cause the contactor to suddenly open while the vehicle is in motion, cutting power to the motor and resulting in an immediate loss of propulsion. Drivers may not receive any warning before the issue occurs, although the vehicle’s screen will display instructions to safely pull over once power is lost.
Tesla has identified multiple warranty claims and field reports related to the issue but has stated that it is not aware of any crashes, injuries, or fatalities linked to the defect.
What Owners Should Do
Tesla will replace the faulty battery contactors with updated components free of charge. The repair is expected to take approximately one hour and can be scheduled directly through the Tesla mobile app.
Owners will be notified and can also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the NHTSA recall database to confirm whether their vehicle is affected.
Drivers who experience any power loss or warning messages should arrange service immediately.
How Tesla Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
