Recall Overview
Hyundai has issued a safety recall and stop-sale order for certain 2026 Palisade SUVs due to a dangerous issue involving the second- and third-row power seat systems. The recall, filed under NHTSA campaign number 26V160000, affects approximately 69,000 vehicles, including around 61,000 in the United States.
The affected vehicles include specific Palisade Limited and Calligraphy trims equipped with powered seat-folding and walk-in functions. Hyundai began investigating the issue after reports that the seats may not properly detect occupants or objects during operation.
The recall gained significant attention following a tragic incident involving a child, along with several additional complaints submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), including reports of injuries involving passengers becoming trapped by moving seats.
What Is the Problem?
According to Hyundai, the issue involves insufficient anti-pinch protection within the power seat system. In certain situations, the seats may continue moving even when a person or object is in the way.
The problem can occur during second- and third-row fold-flat operations, as well as the second-row one-touch “walk-in” feature used to access the third row. Occupants, particularly children, could become pinned or trapped between seats or surrounding vehicle structures if the system fails to stop properly.
Hyundai says the issue may also be triggered accidentally through various seat controls located on the seats, cargo area, or infotainment screen.
What Owners Should Do
Hyundai has developed a software update to improve occupant detection and add additional safety safeguards. The update will require users to press and hold seat controls during operation, disable certain infotainment seat controls, and require the tailgate to be open for some folding functions.
Owners with active Bluelink subscriptions can receive the update over the air, while others will need to visit a dealership for the free repair.
Until the repair is completed, Hyundai advises owners to ensure nobody is near the seat-folding area before operating the powered seats.
How Hyundai Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
