General Motors faces a proposed class action alleging that certain newer Buick and Chevrolet vehicles have defective engine assemblies that can fail suddenly during normal driving. The lawsuit claims a serious engine failure can cause a loss of power and steering assistance, fluid leaks, and potentially a fire.
The case involves 2024 and newer Buick Encore, Buick Envista, Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Chevrolet Trax vehicles equipped with GM’s 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder gasoline engine. The allegations have not been proven in court.
What is the alleged engine defect?
According to the lawsuit, the affected engines can suffer catastrophic internal failures involving components such as the connecting rod. In some reported incidents, the connecting rod allegedly breaks through the engine block, causing the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly.
The complaint describes reports of loud knocking or mechanical noises immediately before an engine failure. Drivers may then experience rapid deceleration, loss of acceleration, and loss of steering assistance. The lawsuit also claims that some failures have involved smoke, leaking fluids, and flames from beneath the hood.
The complaint further alleges that GM has known about the alleged engine problem since at least 2022 and that some owners have encountered difficulties obtaining warranty repairs. It claims replacement engines can also be subject to lengthy backorders, leaving affected vehicles out of service for extended periods.
What owners should know
The vehicles identified in the lawsuit are the 2024-present Buick Encore, 2024-present Buick Envista, 2024-present Chevrolet Trailblazer, and 2024-present Chevrolet Trax. The lawsuit alleges that GM’s warranties should cover the engine failures but claims some owners have been denied coverage or received repairs that did not resolve the underlying issue. It also cites complaints describing engine failures occurring while vehicles were being driven at highway speeds.
Owners who have experienced unusual engine noises, sudden power loss, engine seizure, or major engine damage should retain repair invoices, dealership records, and other documentation relating to the problem.
