Land Rover is recalling more than 15,000 Discovery SUVs after discovering that water may enter the vehicle and damage the rearview camera, potentially leaving drivers without a clear view behind the vehicle when reversing.
What is the problem?
The recall affects 2021-2025 Land Rover Discovery vehicles, and according to the recall information, water can enter the rearview camera assembly and cause the camera to malfunction. If the camera image becomes unavailable while the vehicle is being reversed, drivers may have reduced visibility of people, vehicles, or objects behind them, increasing the risk of a crash.
The issue is particularly concerning because rearview cameras are an important safety feature when backing up and are required to meet federal visibility standards. A driver who relies on the camera may not realize it has been affected until they select reverse and discover that the display is blank or otherwise fails to provide the expected image.
The defect appears to be linked to water intrusion rather than a problem with the driver’s infotainment system itself. Owners experiencing intermittent camera problems may therefore need to have the camera assembly inspected to determine whether moisture damage is responsible.
What owners should do
Owners of 2021-2025 Discovery models should pay attention to any problems with the rearview camera, including a blank screen, a distorted image, or a camera that fails to activate when reverse is selected.
Affected owners should arrange an inspection with a Land Rover dealer and check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall database. Drivers should also keep records of any camera failures, diagnostic appointments and repairs, particularly if the problem returns after being addressed.
How Land Rover owners can take back control
A malfunctioning rearview camera can turn an everyday maneuver such as reversing out of a driveway or parking space into a much greater safety concern. If the same problem continues after a repair, owners may understandably question whether their vehicle has been properly fixed.
