GM Recalls Over 100,000 Vehicles for Tailgate Issue

General Motors (GM) has issued a recall impacting approximately 104,555 vehicles due to a potential tailgate defect. This safety concern involves tailgates that may not latch securely, increasing the risk of unexpected opening while driving, which poses a safety hazard for other road users and the vehicle’s occupants.

History Behind the Recall

The recall stems from reports that certain 2022–2024 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks may have a compromised tailgate latching mechanism. The issue can cause the tailgate to open while the vehicle is in motion, leading to the possible loss of cargo and heightened crash risk. GM has identified a manufacturing defect in the tailgate latching components that may weaken over time, especially during repeated use.

GM first became aware of the issue after receiving warranty claims and field reports. After a detailed investigation, the company decided to issue a voluntary recall in collaboration with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Which Models Are Affected?

The recall covers the following GM vehicles produced between August 2021 and September 2024:

  • Chevrolet Silverado 1500
  • Chevrolet Silverado 2500/3500 HD
  • GMC Sierra 1500
  • GMC Sierra 2500/3500 HD

GM estimates that all affected vehicles have the potential defects.

What Owners Need to Do Next

Owners of the impacted vehicles will receive notification letters starting December 1, 2024. Dealers will inspect and replace the defective tailgate latches free of charge. For now, GM advises drivers to avoid placing heavy or unsecured cargo in their truck beds.

If you believe your vehicle is part of this recall, visit the NHTSA recall website (https://www.nhtsa.gov/) or contact your local GM Dealership.

How GM Owners Can Take Back Control

While recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, just like this—underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
