History Behind the Recall
Volkswagen Group of America has issued a recall affecting 44,387 Audi vehicles from model year 2021 due to a defect in the “Virtual Cockpit” instrument cluster. According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a fault in the internal flat cable of the digital display can cause the screen to go black, eliminating critical driver information such as vehicle speed, RPM, and gear selection.
The issue arises when minor damage to the flex-foil cable increases contact resistance. The software is so sensitive to this resistance that it shuts down the entire display to protect the system. While no crashes, fires, or injuries have been reported, Audi has logged over 2,285 complaints tied to the malfunction.
Investigations dating back to April 2024 confirmed that the condition is due to age-related degradation of the display cable, affecting only models produced with the older hardware before a sub-supplier change in July 2021.
Which Models Are Affected
The following 2021 Audi models are included in recall number 25V-201 (internal reference 90VC):
- A6, A6 Allroad, A7, A8
- Q7, Q8
- SQ7, SQ8
- S6 Sedan, S7, S8
- RS6 Avant, RS7, RSQ8
Vehicles produced between July 2020 and May 2021 are subject to the defect.
What Owners Need to Do Next
Audi dealerships will perform a software update that prevents the display from shutting down when minor cable damage is detected. Instead, relevant warning indicators will remain visible and alert the driver to seek service. The repair will be free of charge.
Dealer notifications began on April 2, 2025. Owner letters are expected to be mailed on or before May 30, 2025.
Audi owners may contact customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and reference recall number 90VC. Alternatively, visit www.nhtsa.gov or call NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
How Audi Owners Can Take Back Control
While these recalls have been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
