Polestar, the Swedish electric vehicle brand, is recalling 27,822 Polestar 2 EVs in the U.S. due to a defect that can cause the rearview camera to malfunction.
History Behind the Recall
The issue, first identified in a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), involves camera display errors that may occur when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The screen may either freeze or display a message saying “Camera is temporarily unavailable,” instead of showing the live rearview image.
Rearview camera display issues pose a safety risk by impairing a driver’s visibility while reversing. This recall follows NHTSA’s increased scrutiny of camera system reliability across all automakers.
According to Polestar, the problem arises from a synchronization error between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the Infotainment Head Unit (IHU) and a fault in the IHU’s video signal receiver.

This recall applies to 2021–2025 Polestar 2 electric vehicles built between July 2020 and late November 2023. These were Polestar’s first mass-market EVs in the U.S., although the company no longer manufactures them for the U.S. market.
Polestar operates in 27 countries globally, but this recall affects only U.S.-based units.

Owners will be notified by June 19, 2025. The fix includes a free software update that will maintain a stable connection between the PAC and IHU and implement a hardware reset if synchronization errors are detected.
