Recall Overview

Kia has issued a safety recall affecting 342 units of the 2025 Kia EV9 due to a defect that could lead to a loss of drive power. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue impacts certain all-wheel-drive versions of the three-row electric SUV.

While the total number of affected vehicles is relatively small, the defect is considered a safety risk due to its potential impact on vehicle propulsion.

What Is the Problem?

The issue stems from the rear gear drive unit, which may contain a motor shaft that was improperly welded during manufacturing. This defect can cause damage to the shaft over time, reducing its ability to transfer power from the electric motor to the wheels.

If the problem occurs, drivers may experience reduced acceleration or a complete loss of propulsion. Warning signs may include unusual driveline noises and dashboard alerts such as a “Check AWD/4WD” message.

Kia estimates that only a small percentage of the recalled vehicles, approximately 4%, actually have the defect. However, because the issue could result in sudden power loss, it poses a potential safety concern.

What Owners Should Do

Kia dealers will replace the faulty rear gear drive unit free of charge to resolve the issue. This repair is intended to restore normal power delivery and eliminate the risk of failure.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting March 7. In the meantime, owners can contact Kia customer service at 800-333-4542 or check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the NHTSA recall database to confirm whether their vehicle is affected.

Drivers who notice unusual noises or warning messages should schedule a service appointment as soon as possible.

How Kia Owners Can Take Back Control

While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
