Toyota is recalling 8,521 2026 C-HR electric crossovers in the United States after discovering that a software error could cause the vehicle’s battery to become overcharged under certain conditions. If that happens, the electric drive system may shut down, leaving the vehicle without drive power while it is being driven.
What is the problem?
The recall involves the software controlling the C-HR’s battery protection system. Under certain conditions, the battery can become overcharged because the software does not properly limit the effects of regenerative braking.
The issue is more likely to occur when the battery has a high state of charge, temperatures are low, and the vehicle is using regenerative braking for an extended period. If the battery becomes overcharged, the electric drive system can shut down.
A sudden loss of motive power could leave a driver unable to accelerate as expected and increase the risk of a collision. Toyota says warning lights and an audible buzzer should alert drivers if the problem occurs. The company has not reported any warranty claims or field reports associated with the defect.
The recall is listed as NHTSA Campaign Number 26V570000, with Toyota identifying it as recall 26TA17.
What owners should do
Toyota dealers will update the Battery Electric Vehicle Electronic Control Unit software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed from October 18, 2026, but owners can check their VIN through the NHTSA recall system or contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 to find out whether their C-HR is affected.
Until the repair is completed, drivers should remain alert to any warning messages, warning lights, or audible alerts indicating a loss of drive power.
