Ford has announced a safety recall affecting more than 115,000 heavy-duty trucks due to a steering column issue that could result in loss of control.
The recall, assigned NHTSA campaign number 25V-XXX and Ford reference 25S94, involves 2020–2021 Ford Super Duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 models. These vehicles may have steering column upper shafts that do not meet required “anti-pull-apart” strength standards.
According to Ford, if the upper shaft separates under stress, the driver could lose steering control entirely, increasing the risk of a crash. While the automaker estimates only about 1% of the vehicles contain the defect, the safety implications are severe.
What’s the Problem?
The defect stems from a supplier issue that allowed certain components to slip past quality control. Affected shafts may fail under load, resulting in sudden disconnection of the steering column. So far, Ford has received seven warranty claims, but no injuries or accidents have been reported.
Which Vehicles Are Affected?
- 2020–2021 Ford F-250 Super Duty
- 2020–2021 Ford F-350 Super Duty
- 2020–2021 Ford F-450 Super Duty
These trucks are widely used for both personal and commercial purposes, making the urgency to fix this defect even more critical.
What Should Owners Do?
Ford will begin notifying affected owners by early October 2025. Owners will be able to schedule free inspections and repairs at authorized dealerships. If the steering shaft fails inspection, the entire component will be replaced at no cost.
To check if your truck is affected:
- Visit the NHTSA recall lookup or Ford’s recall website and enter your VIN.
- Look out for mailed or emailed notifications.
- Contact your local Ford dealer to schedule an inspection.
Drivers are urged to monitor their steering for looseness or unresponsiveness, and report any concerns immediately, even before the official notice arrives.
How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
