Recall Overview
Tesla has issued a safety recall affecting 12,963 electric vehicles due to a defect that may cause a sudden loss of drive power while driving. According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall includes certain 2025 Tesla Model 3 sedans and 2026 Tesla Model Y SUVs.
Of the affected vehicles, approximately 5,038 are Model 3 units, while 7,925 are Model Y vehicles. The issue has been identified as a potential safety concern due to the risk of unexpected propulsion loss, particularly at higher speeds.
What Is the Problem?
The defect involves the battery pack contactor, specifically a solenoid component that may fail due to a poor internal connection. If the contactor unexpectedly opens while the vehicle is in motion, it can immediately cut power from the battery to the electric motor.
This may result in a sudden loss of propulsion without prior warning. Although drivers may receive a visual alert instructing them to pull over once the issue occurs, the lack of advance warning increases the risk of a crash.
Tesla has reported multiple warranty claims and field reports related to the issue but has stated that it is not aware of any accidents, injuries, or fatalities linked to the defect.
What Owners Should Do
Tesla will replace the faulty battery contactors free of charge for affected vehicles. Owners will be notified and instructed to schedule a service appointment through Tesla’s service network.
Owner notification letters are expected to be sent beginning December 9 2025. In the meantime, owners can check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) through the NHTSA recall database or Tesla’s service platform to confirm whether their vehicle is included.
Drivers who experience any warning messages or loss of power should seek service immediately.
How Tesla Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
