Recall Overview
Ford has issued a major safety recall affecting 272,645 vehicles in the United States due to a defect that could cause vehicles to roll away unexpectedly. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue impacts several popular models, including the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and Maverick.
The recall covers certain model years ranging from 2022 through 2026 and addresses a fault within the vehicle’s parking system that may prevent it from properly engaging when placed in “Park.”
What Is the Problem?
The defect involves the integrated park module, a key component responsible for locking the vehicle in place when shifted into park. In affected vehicles, the module may fail to engage correctly due to a software-related issue.
If this occurs, the vehicle may not remain stationary and could roll away after being parked, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. While a warning light may illuminate to alert the driver, it may take a few seconds after shifting into park for the system to detect and display the issue.
Because rollaway incidents can happen without immediate warning, this defect is considered a serious safety concern.
What Owners Should Do
Ford will resolve the issue with a software update that can be installed either over the air or at a dealership, free of charge. This update is designed to ensure the integrated park module functions correctly.
Interim owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting February 2, 2026, with additional communication to follow once the final remedy is fully implemented. Owners can also check their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website beginning January 26 to confirm whether their vehicle is affected.
In the meantime, drivers are advised to ensure their vehicle is securely parked and to watch for any warning indicators.
How Ford Owners Can Take Back Control
While this recall has been communicated to owners, many continue to be unhappy with the solutions provided by automakers. These problems have the potential to escalate into further action, underlining the importance of protecting consumer rights.
