Ford is recalling 565,691 Bronco and Bronco Raptor SUVs after discovering that wiring inside the engine compartment may become damaged, creating a short circuit and potentially causing a fire. The recall affects vehicles from the 2021-2026 model years, with Ford identifying 15 incidents potentially linked to the defect.
What is the problem?
The issue centers on the engine compartment wiring harness, which may not have enough protection against rubbing against nearby components. Over time, this contact can wear through the harness covering and expose the wires inside, and if the exposed wiring short-circuits, it can generate enough heat or a spark to ignite a fire in the engine compartment. Drivers may receive a warning message on the dashboard or notice smoke coming through the vehicle’s air vents before flames develop.
Ford has identified 15 incidents in which a fire may have originated from the affected wiring harness. The incidents occurred between October 2024 and June 2026, and the manufacturer has not reported any crashes or injuries associated with the defect. The recall covers 2021-2026 Ford Bronco and Bronco Raptor models, and Ford estimates that approximately 1% of the recalled vehicles are likely to contain the defect.
What owners should do
Owners of affected Broncos should check their VIN through the NHTSA recall database to determine whether their vehicle is included. Recall notification letters are expected to be mailed beginning August 24, 2026.
Ford dealers will inspect the wiring harness and install protective sheathing and abrasion tape at no cost to owners. Drivers who notice smoke, unusual smells, or warning messages should take the issue seriously and arrange for their vehicle to be inspected.
